Beevo with the "Pluto Telescope". Since I had been up to Lowell the last time they apparently have added this scope to the tour. I credit this image to an un-named elderly woman on the tour who offered to take my picture with the scope after I had offered to do the same previously for she and her husband. I think she regretted it when she discovered the 10D, battery grip, two batteries, Tokina ATX Pro 28-80 and strap weighed around 5 lbs. She's a good photographer despite the weight of the camera and slow shutter speed!
I kind of liked the boxing glove on the counterweight bar. Apparently the floor was about 2 feet higher than it is now. The telescope uses a very large plate camera, no visual back is available. The setting circles are about 3 feet in diameter!
Detail of the RA setting circle. Quite the vernier set up!
The dome is constructed in the same manner as the dome for the 24" Clark telescope's was. Spruce lathe and framework.
Wide shot of the 24" Clark telescope.
The tour guide while standing around 5'8" (my guess) is dwarfed by the telescope.
Note the Telrad and the POS Meade 8X50 finders. I thought the Telrad was a nice touch but had to wonder why they would mount as bad of a finder as the Meade on a classic scope such as this.
Percival Lowell's mausoleum. A glass structure was placed over it to protect the tile work from the ravages of the weather and pollution.
The left hand gate post at the observatory entrance.
I nicely overcast say made the trip up the mountain quite enjoyable for the middle of July. This is looking out over north Flagstaff. |
